CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a light-touch approach that can create dramatic improvements in your life. It releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance.
Few body structures have more influence over your health and well-being than your central nervous system. And few body systems have more impact on your central nervous system than the craniosacral system - the soft tissues and fluid that protect your brain and spinal cord.
Every day you endure stresses and strains and your body absorbs them. But your body can only handle so much tension before the tissues begin to tighten and potentially affect the brain and spinal cord.
Unfortunately, this can compromise the function of the central nervous system - and the performance of nearly every other system in your body.
CranioSacral Therapy releases those tensions to allow the entire body to relax and self-correct. Using a gentle touch - starting with about the weight of a nickel - practitioners evaluate your internal environment. Then they use distinctive light-touch techniques to release any restrictions they find.
By freeing the central nervous system to perform at its best, CranioSacral Therapy naturally eliminates pain and stress, strengthens your resistance to disease, and enhances your health and well-being.
And because it's so gentle, CranioSacral Therapy can be effective for all ages, from newborns to elders.

This is not an exhaustive list of conditions that may be helped by Craniosacral Therapy, but do remember that if you are getting any symptoms, the first thing to do is seek medical advice in case it is something serious that needs conventional medical attention
A typical CranioSacral Therapy session takes place in a quiet, private setting. Your therapist begins by gently touching various parts of your body to monitor the rhythm of the fluid that is flowing around your central nervous system. There is no need to disrobe, we suggest comfortable clothing that you can move in without restriction.
By carefully listening with the hands to locate areas of weak fluid flow or restricted tissue motion, your practitioner can trace those areas of weakness through the body to the original source of dysfunction.
Delicate manual techniques are then used to release those problem areas and improve the form and function of your central nervous system. Although the term CranioSacral refers to the head and tailbone we treat the body as a whole system and may work with limbs, trunk, back & neck.
CranioSacral Therapy has a wholistic approach rather then a specific area symptomatic relief approach. We look at how the person relates to their whole body & mind. We aim to allow the Central Nervous System to regain a balance to promote Rest & Repair of the body.
A CranioSacral Therapy session can last up to an hour or more. It can be used alone or integrated with other therapies to create powerful effects. Sessions are usually shorter with babies & children.
What you experience from your own session is highly individual. An emotional release during the session or in the days that follow can happen, but seems to happen when the person needs to complete an emotional experience. The sessions are generally deeply relaxing & most people fall asleep or into a meditative state.
CranioSacral Therapy was pioneered and developed by osteopathic physician John E. Upledger. Dr. Upledger served from 1975-1983 as a clinical researcher and Professor of Biomechanics at the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University. It was during those years that his team of anatomists, physiologists, biophysicists and bio-engineers were tasked with performing the experiments testing the existence and influence of the craniosacral system.
The results of those studies explained the function of the craniosacral system, and its use in evaluating and treating poorly understood malfunctions of the brain and spinal cord. Dr. Upledger went onto develop CranioSacral Therapy and other complementary modalities. Featured in TIME magazine as one of America’s next wave of Innovators. Dr. John Upledger left us in 2012 with the legacy of his life’s work that is now taught worldwide to healthcare professionals through Upledger Institute International's educational programs. Over 100,000 practitioners trained in more than 100 countries have taken Upledger courses.

Cranial bone motion has been the most controversial phenomenon of the Primary Respiratory Mechanism (PRM), but there is ample evidence that the cranial bones do rhythmically move a small but definite amount.

Time for a Convergence
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) at least 47% of adults have suffered from headaches in the last year..
All participants in this study observed positive changes in their health status and most attributed these to CST; these changes were frequently accompanied by new levels of health awareness which enhanced participants’ capacity to self-care. Interviewees were self-selected users of CST and the data are therefore subject to certain methodological biases.
Osteopathic cranial treatment will assist resolution of TMJ symptoms and improve results with the dental splint. The benefits of a team approach by dentists and physicians are discussed
Craniosacral therapy improves the quality of life of patients with fibromyalgia, reducing their perception of pain and fatigue and improving their night rest and mood, with an increase in physical function. Craniosacral therapy . . . also reduces anxiety levels, partially improving the depressive state.
